We are ‘So Fresh’

Farm2school4I truly enjoyed our “Farm 2 Fresh” lunch theme last week!  Using a “Farm 2 Fresh” theme, select APS lunchrooms featured a local farmers market stand.
Tuesday, Brightside Farm of East Atlanta visited students at Bethune Elementary School. Brightside Farm grows a diversity of fruits and vegetables on two acres of land just miles from East Atlanta.  Wednesday, Love is Love made a stop at Brown Middle School. The 5-acre farm resides at Gaia Gardens near Decatur and is certified organic.
Coastal Georgia Small Arms Coop  hosted its farmers market at Boyd Elementary on Thursday. This group of small farmers has maintained its farm-to-school program since 2005, producing and delivering its Georgia-grown vegetables.

The farm has been owned by one family for nearly a century. Also at Carver on Friday was The Good Shepherd Agro-Ecology Center, an urban farm located in Atlanta’s West End. There were cooking demonstrations that provided students an opportunity to see how healthy meals can be created from farm to table. Brown Middle School students were treated to collard greens provided by The Atlanta Botanical Garden as well as a cooking demonstration by Community Farmers Market. CFM operates the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market, Grant Park Farmers Market, Decatur Farmers Market, as well as an education program.
