Long Middle School Update

Throughout our school visits today, APS has been aware of a bomb threat at Long Middle School this morning.  The school was evacuated for a short time and students were relocated temporarily to the South Atlanta educational complex.

I’ve been kept abreast of this issue throughout the day by my safety and security team.  The APS security staff, along with the Atlanta Police Department  managed the situation, including a thorough bomb sweep of the entire campus.

The threat is now over and the entire school is safe for occupancy.  Students have now been taken back to the Long Middle School campus for the remainder of the day.  Atlanta Public Schools has notified the families of all Long students.

I know that these types of incidents are unsettling to parents and to our students.  I want you to feel safe and secure her in our district and I am committing and working to making these types of daily incidents a story of yesterday.  Thank you for your patience as we shape a new culture in APS.

Long1We visited Crawford W. Long Middle School today.  Principal Lisa Hill toured the school with us and it was exciting to see students and teachers engaged in learning, using mathematics manipulative and interactive technology.
It was especially exciting to see students responding to the teacher and problems on the interactive board using hand-held ActiVotes which allowed every student to share his or her answer with classmates and the teacher on the interactive board.
LongLong has a student population of 600 students and Principal Hill has called this school home for four years.  The school feeds into the South Atlanta High School Learning Complex and is named after Crawford Williamson Long, renowned surgeon and pharmacist.
The school boasts an organic garden created with a grant from the Atlanta Families’ Award for Excellence in Education.  The garden helps to teach students sustainability and promote healthy eating choices.

Have a great year Long Middle staff and students!
